Oedipus El Rey
National New Play Network World Premiere by Luis Alfaro
Directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera

Previews February 18 - 26

Runs February 27 - March 28, 2010

In this gritty reimagining of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, the modern kingdom is the barrio of East LA. Our ruler, just released from prison, is in search of a new place called home. Along the way he faces off with a wounded queen, a three-headed born-again serpent and a king with road rage. Is our young homeboy doomed to suffer his destiny? The word on the street is not good, but great love conquers all. A shared world premiere with San Francisc
o's Magic Theatre.

Extended Stay - The purpose of the criminal justice system is to simultaneously punish and rehabilitate those incarcerated, yet what convicts tend to learn is how to be better criminals. Upon release they lack the skills necessary to be productive citizens and eventually find themselves back behind bars. In this panel we discuss the root cause behind, and what can be done to improve, the recidivism rates in California.

Sunday, March 21 after the 2pm performance
Oedipus, It's Complex - Oedipus has stood as a model of theatrical creation and exciting storytelling. It has also served as the inspiration for any number of plays, movies and other artistic endeavors. Wherever works deal with familial relations, questions of faith, tragic flaws and insidious secrets, you can be sure Oedipus is lurking there. This discussion will explore these works and Oedipus' lasting influence.
